Coming at you all with a giant list of binge-worthy shows to watch on Netflix! If you haven’t seen some of these shows before, read up on them and enjoy!
Starring: Claire Foy, Matt Smith, Vanessa Kirby, John Lithgow
The show is based off of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign as a young woman. Elizabeth’s (Claire Foy) life is changed when her father, King George VI, dies and she suddenly has to become the Queen at the young age of 25. Drama ensues as her family adjusts to the changes and Elizabeth marries and starts her own family.
This show is a juicy drama with historical accuracy. Some of the events in the show seem too dramatic to be real, but after some good research, I found out that the events were true. This is a show that is too good to stop watching.
Starring: Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman, Mark Gatiss, Amanda Abbington
Benedict Cumberbatch plays a drug addicted, “high functioning sociopathic” version of Sherlock Holmes, alongside a timid but tough John Watson played by Martin Freeman. The duo solve classic Arthur Conan Doyle crimes but with a darker and dramatic twist.
Each episode is an hour and a half long, resulting in three mini-movies each season. The series becomes highly addictive and thrilling as it progresses and the viewers see deep into Sherlock’s demons, as well as the minds of his “admirers” and enemies.
LEMONY SNICKET’S A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS
Starring: Neil Patrick Harris, Malina Weissman, Patrick Warburton, Louis Hynes
This witty and clever twist on the beloved novels is brought to life with Neil Patrick Harris playing the wretched Count Olaf. After siblings Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire lose their parents to a mysterious fire in their home, they are sent to live with a distant relative, Count Olaf, who is only after their enormous fortune left by their parents. Count Olaf puts the children in incredibly dangerous situations, but using their brains, hearts, and strange skills, they’re able to out smart him time and time again.
I was a huge fan of these novels as a kid, and I thought this show was spot on! If you were, or still are, a fan of ASOUE, give it a watch!
JANE THE VIRGIN
Starring: Gina Rodriguez, Justin Baldoni, Yael Grobglas, Brett Dier
Looking for a telenovella? This show is for you.
Proud virgin and devoted Catholic, Jane Villanueva (Gina Rodriguez) finds herself accidentally inseminated with successful hotel owner, Rafael Solano’s (Justin Baldoni) child. Of course, this leads to a crazy amount of drama and confusion for Jane, as she is in a happy relationship already, and has never had sex. Not only that, but her absent father, a famous telenovella star, rejoins her life, and Jane finds herself in a tangled web of drama, family, and a love triangle.
Jane the Virgin is funny, dramatic, and also has mystery and murder. It’s everything that’s great in a show all wrapped in one!
THE MINDY PROJECT
Starring: Mindy Kaling, Ike Barinholtz, Chris Messina, Ed Weeks
Mindy, a thirty-something year old gynaecologist, is looking for romance as she lives her busy and crazy New York doctor life. She meets lots of men, falls in love numerous times, and breaks up with men numerous times, too. Mindy often finds herself in awkward, and hilariously funny, situations, alongside her coworkers at her practice.
The Mindy Project is a hysterical sitcom for those who enjoy romcoms. Mindy’s life is basically one huge, awkward, romcom, and she always manages to find the best in every situation, especially if food is involved.
SANTA CLARITA DIET
Starring: Drew Barrymore, Timothy Olyphant, Liv Hewson, Skyler Gisondo
She may look normal on the outside, but on the inside, Sheila (Drew Barrymore) is craving brains, fingers, or any other human body part. One afternoon at work with her husband, Sheila mysteriously finds herself becoming a different person, craving blood instead of sweets or carbs like a normal human being. With the help of her daughter, a neighbour, and her husband, they set out to find how Sheila has become “undead.”
This isn’t your typical zombie show. It’s funny and odd, and it’s not set in a post-apocalyptic time. The show is filled with comedy and mystery and is perfect for those who aren’t usually a fan of zombie shows, and those who are.
Starring: Millie Bobbie Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Noah Schnapp, Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Joe Keery, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton
Okay, if you haven’t watched Stranger Things yet, you must be living under a rock. This show has definitely changed Netflix for the GOOD. It’s scary, exciting, and totally unlike other shows you’ve seen before.
It takes place in the ’80’s and everything is retro and funky from the bicycles they ride to the music playing in the background. It’s a show that you will want to call in sick for at work to binge for a whole day. With only 8 episodes in Season 1 and 10 episodes in Season 2, bineging in a day or two is doable if you’re intense binge-watching.
Starring: Andy Samberg, Melissa Fumero, Chelsea Peretti, Stephanie Beatriz, Andre Braugher, Terry Crews, Jo Lo Truglio
If you’re a fan of New Girl or The Mindy Project, you’ll definitely want to watch Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
This sitcom follows the lives of detectives at the Ninety-Ninth Precinct in Brooklyn, and the crimes and comedy ensue. Whether it’s the need for yogurt, a love for Mario Batali, or trying to prove who the best detective is, these detectives will have you laughing out loud and wondering if this is what actually goes on at a police precinct.
Starring: Charlie Cox, Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson
Blinded by acid at a young age, Matt Murdoch (Charlie Cox) has learned how to become stronger by using his other heightened senses. When injustice strikes NYC, Matt decides to use his abilities for good. Lawyer by day, and at night, he becomes the Daredevil of Hell’s Kitchen and uses his abilities to stop the bad guys.
Netflix does an incredibly good job with this show. It’s suspenseful and action-packed, but also much darker than most Marvel shows and movies out there. Daredevil is set in Hell’s Kitchen with a serious tone and mature crimes and superheroes. Definitely give this show a binge watch if you love Marvel and superheroes.
Starring: Zooey Deschanel, Jake Johnson, Max Greenfield, Hannah Simone, Lamorne Morris
Seasons: 6 (on Netflix and final Season 7 just aired on television)
Quirky, awkward, funny, and cringe-worthy – this is how I describe New Girl. Jessica Day (Zooey Deschanel) will make you cringe, Nick Miller (Jake Johnson) will make you question if men can actually survive on their own, Schmidt (Max Greenfield) will make you laugh but also annoyed, Winston Bishop (Lamorne Morris) will make you love cats, and Cece Parekh (Hannah Simone) will make you stay sane. All together, this tight-knit group will make you fall in love with this show.
HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER
Starring: Viola Davis, Jack Falahee, Karla Souza, Alfred Enoch, Matt McGorry, Aja Naomi King, Charlie Webber, Liza Weil, Billy Brown, Conrad Ricamora
Seasons: 3 (on Netflix and Season 4 just aired on television)
Viola Davis kills it (no pun intended) as Annalise Keating, alongside her group of law students in How To Get Away With Murder. This Shondaland show will make you crave more after each and every episode. The story is told in a non-linear way, where each episode you are given tiny pieces of the end of the season, leaving you questioning what is going on and what will happen throughout the season.
Drama, love, mystery and murder – this is everything that makes up the show. If this sounds like something you’d be interested in, then definitely give it a watch.
LIFE IN PIECES
Starring: Colin Hanks, Zoe Lister-Jones, James Brolin, Thomas Sadoski, Diane West, Betsy Brandt, Angelique Cabral, Dan Bakkedahl
Seasons: 2 (on Netflix and Season 3 just aired on television)
The next level up from Modern Family.
Life in Pieces is about one crazy, tight-knit family and their not-so-boring lives. Each episode is divided into four parts, one for each side of the family. It’s hilarious what the family gets up to and the situations they find themselves in. Their lives are as normal as weekly Sunday brunches and family get togethers, and are as odd as having your son live in the shed of your backyard with his fiancee and a wrestling match in the garage.
Give this one a watch if you’re in the mood for a good laugh!
THE END OF THE F***ING WORLD
Starring: Jessica Barden, Alex Lawther, Gemma Whelan
This show is odd and strange, yet it’s dark and funny. This pair get into an uncomfortable situation; Alyssa (Jessica Barden) just wants to find a friend to escape her life with, and James (Alex Lawther) just wants to find someone to kill.
James believes he is a psychopathic killer and sets eyes on Alyssa at school. Alyssa believes James is a loner and sets eyes on him at the cafeteria. They both believe they are the perfect pair for each other so they run away and set off, causing trouble and leaving turmoil behind.
Unfortunately there is only one season at the moment, so take your time bingeing this one!
Starring: Jason Bateman, Jeffery Tambor, Will Arnett, Michael Cera, Alia Shawkat, Portia di Rossi, David Cross, Jessica Walters, Tony Hale
The Bluth family – a successful family that owns housing developments – find themselves in a horrible situation when George Bluth (Jeffery Tambor) is arrested. They have to buckle down on their expenses, live out of a model home, and learn how to be middle-class.
The show is absolute chaos as it follows the lives of all the Bluths and the ridiculous scenarios that they live. Whether Michael Bluth (Jason Bateman) wants to admit it or not, his family will always need him and he will always need his family.
Watch this one for the running jokes, dry humour, and crazy scenarios!
