Have you ever watched a show or a movie, or flipped furiously through the pages of a book, and fell in love with a character? I have, too many times to count. What if that character was in love with the main character, or they had a special bond with that character, and yet, they never got their shot with them. Frustrating, right?
This brings me back to The Mindy Project, of course, because I’m obsessed with it and I’m sad that it’s over. I was watching Season 4, and that’s when Jody Kimball-Kinney enters the series. At first, I was thinking who the hell is this guy and why is he such a sleaze ball? BUT THEN, I got to know the character better and he melted my heart. He deserved more love.
This got me to thinking: there are so many other characters out there in the world that should have been the guy/gal to end up with the main character. That’s what this post is all about today.
Jody Kimball-Kinney, The Mindy Project
Okay, let’s start off with the one that makes me upset the most – Jody Kimball-Kinney. As mentioned above, he entered the series after Danny and Mindy were together and had somewhat of a life established together (Mindy lived at Danny’s place, they were in love and had a baby). HOWEVER, Danny left Mindy for a long while for family reasons and she was left to take care of her newborn and herself. Enter Jody.
Jody, a sweet man from Georgia, was charming, caring, (may also have had an STD but it was treated) and he genuinely cared about Mindy. He became a partner in her fertility clinic, helped her in ways you could not imagine, and he even bought an entire apartment upstairs for her because she had no room in her own place for both her and her son. THAT HAD ME SWOONING.
What really ticked me off was that although Danny and Mindy were crazy stupid in love, Danny disrespected Mindy on multiple occasions. He didn’t believe she could handle being a mother and also being a gynaecologist and have her own fertility clinic, and he wanted Mindy to be a stay-at-home mother. They argued constantly and broke up. AGAIN, enter Jody. He was always there for her! No matter what! But Mindy didn’t reciprocate those feelings, unfortunately. I guess you can’t help who you love!
Jody Kimball-Kinney deserved WAY BETTER. Although, Jody did have his own happy ending, I think that he deserved more love from Mindy.
Betty Cooper, Riverdale
Now this one is a totally unpopular opinion, but I’ll explain why. I’ve been a huge fan of the Archie Comics for as long as I can remember. I have a huge stack of them and I won’t lie, I still purchase them and read them. I have always loved Archie and Betty’s relationship more than Archie and Veronica’s. Veronica was always manipulative and seemed to just want Archie because Betty wanted him. Kind of rude, don’t you think?
I know that Riverdale is a totally different universe than the Archie Comics and that Jughead is with Betty and Veronica is with Archie and yaddi yadda. BUT. Just hear me out. What if Betty had the same love and respect from Archie in Riverdale that she got from him in the comic books? It would be mind blowing.
Betty is the perfect girl next door. Yes, she’s much darker in the television series, but I have always been a huge shipper of Archie and Betty. At least give it a try for a bit in the show, or something!!
Ethan, Something Borrowed
You’re damn right, Ethan! Ethan was the only one who really cared about Rachel in the film based on the novel, Something Borrowed.
Ethan, played by the fabulous John Krasinski, was best friends with main character, Rachel. They’d been through thick and thin. He was there for her through tears and joy, and sadness and happiness. It’s not wonder that developed feelings for her.
Of course, the good guys always finish last in stories like this. Rachel was in love with an old university classmate, who then got engaged to her best friend, Darcy. Oh, did I forget to mention that this guy was sleeping with Rachel behind his fiancee’s back? He was in love with Rachel, too, but took his sweet time ending the relationship with Darcy.
Ethan confessed his feelings for Rachel and she shut him down, friendzone style. She didn’t do it in a mean way, of course, because she cared about Ethan. ETHAN DESERVED WAY BETTER THAN THIS, OKAY? In the books, he ends up with Darcy… not the kind of love I thought he deserved.
Jess Mariano, Gilmore Girls
Yes, Jess was a little pain in the butt. Yes, he caused problems with Rory and left her to go find his birth father. Yes, he showed up out of the blue one day, told Rory that he loved her, and left again. Jess Marino is a problem starter, but man oh man, did he deserve better, especially in the most recent revival season of Gilmore Girls.
Rory Gilmore chose sneaky and sleazy Logan Huntzberger over kind and intellectual Jess Mariano. She still saw Logan even though he was reportedly engaged to someone else overseas, and Jess always came around to knock some sense into her!
Jess was always in love with Rory. He would stare longingly at her, probably regretting the mistakes he made when they were kids. But the past was the past! Times have changed! They grew up!
In the revival, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, Rory revealed a big secret and a lot of people had their theories and I think they might be true: Logan would be Rory’s Christopher and Jess would be Rory’s Luke. Imagine if Jess ended up with Rory… all would be perfect in the world.
